SMU Fencing held their 5th Exco Elections yesterday..

The results are:

Congrats to the 6 of you and all the best in the coming days!

For the past acad year, I can confidently speak on behalf of the entire team that we've had a great year with tons of achievements, numerous exciting events, and lots of lessons learnt through training camp, competitions, overseas experiences etc. And all these are not possible without the hard work and effort of the outgoing exco. Thank you pple. Many of us may not expressed our appreciation outwardly but I guess in all our hearts, we know who did what for us and we're thankful for that. You guys made the year an exciting and fruitful one.

Once again, SMU fencers come sweeping medals home!

A total of 22 male and female fencers took part in RJC Invite which took place over the past 4 days. Below are the brilliant results:

Our annual training camp has ended successfully, hopefully with everyone bringing smiles, great experiences, sour and bruised legs and arms, great friendships, more motivation and a greater passion for fencing home..

we got the prestigious SMU COMPETITIVE EXCELLENCE CLUB AWARD
again this year. Many many thanks to everyone....

for organising international competition for the year.

It’s unfair, it’s imprecise, and there’s a good chance that I make horrible mistakes, but there’s a lot more of you than me, and while hiring phenomenal teams is the most important thing I do, I’m balancing that task with the fact that I need to build product and manage the endless stream of people walking into my office.

But here’s a glimpse. I’m going to walk through the exact mental process I use when I look at a resume. I don’t know if this is right or efficient, but after fifteen years and staring at thousands of resumes, this is the process.

Fencing Dragons

The SMU Team took part in the SMU Dragonboat Regatta last weekend which was held at the very far Raffles Marina.

During our quite long bus ride there...

It was indeed a great experience for us. We got to try out a totally different sport. We normally wear a lot of clothes (like, at least 3 layers + breeches or long pants) during fencing, and train in an indoor, aircon, dry environment. Now we got onto a totally different thing where we just wear shorts n tshirts/singlet, gotta put some sunblock lotion, go under the hot sun, get wet and dirty. But I gusssed we had fun, didn't we, fencing dragons?

Thanks for all the help from writing run dates on postcards to carrying stuff from the not very near admin block to the not very near booth, walking around psychoing ppl, or sitting at the booth showing your beautiful legs and collecting money.

Yay! We won bronze for Pesta Sukan! I remember talking about getting a medal at Pesta Sukan for years. I'm so glad to win this with these 2 girls. Though we were rather lucky for this competition, we didn't take it for granted and gave our all. I'm proud of us. We went further than our guys! =p Before today, I wasn't confident of winning a medal but we did it! Proof that we were totally not expecting a medal - none of us brought a camera for today. So excuse the badly taken pictures.

Guys who came down to support the girls - Ziwen, Jianwei, Zhengrong, Young, Chuanyao, Shawn - Thanks! And the 3 of us were very touched by Xuehui's sms this morning too. Thanks everyone. =)

Yo everyone..

It has been almost one year since our batch joined SMU Fencing... And thinking back, we may not have share alot of time together going out or whatsoever. But somehow, with all the many trainings per week, for this period of time for the same goal. I believe we somehow get to know each of us better and definitely we will get to know everyone in the club even better after Hong Kong, and other competitions and trainings we have in sch (coz i meant everyone in the club, not only those that are going to HK).

And for now, 1 week and 1 day left, before we chiong to HK. All the best to everyone and most importantly chill and enjoy.... and most importantly. Take care!!!!

Yesterday training headcount..

6 people
3 blades
1 broken..
1 injured...
Few gamblers...

Stunning stuffs Lee Young did..
No 1:

When young fence with ziwen he keep whacking his blade damn hard
and after a few min... something flew out...
and he continued to poke at ziwen....
luckily it was only his hand..
broken blade with young strength into ziwen's hand = angry ziwen with a swollen hand

Worst thing is young said "HAND ONLY WAT!!"....

Lesson learnt:
1) NO MORE FENCING WITH YOUNG..
2) ** Impt - Please remember to wear plastron while fencing.. (seriously)

No 2:

When we test guard.. and i poke on young's blade, *BEEP, there's sound.. why?
Possible reasons young gave:

Reason 1
hahahaha ur wire spoil liao... need to buy from coach hahahh...

Reason 2
xuehui ur blade spoil......

ziwen your blade izzit?

scoreboard or watever spoil...

so with all above reasons - we were busy checking all above stuff...

Once again, our team has got something gold in colour back this year. Last year it was Mens Team, this year, it's Womens Team. Next year, we'll sweep both.. Haha..

Anyway, personally I'll just like to congrats my own team mates - Hanwen, Vivien and Wensi for the hard work and determination they put in before and during the comp. It is a Gold that's deservingly ours.

Girls Team B, it's your turn next year. No Bronze, no Silver, it's Gold that you and I are interested in. Anyway, you girls did gave a very good fight!

For our team's guys and those long-time-no-see seniors who came down to support, thanks! Althou when we fence, we're physically alone on the piste, facing the opponent, but mentally, we had all of you with us up in our minds, so many of you all, and the mental support was really impt. Parallel to what Coach always say, fencing is a physical and mental game. Mentally, because of your presence and your support, we already won, so thanks!

And to Captain Mac, thanks for training us so well and the constant advices along the way.

And of cos to Coach, btw, Coach disclosed to me that he does read some of his students' blogs. Anyway, thanks to coach also, training stuffs apart, most importantly for believing in us and giving us confidence. I hope SMU team is the team you're proudest of.

His sources are, of course, unconfirmed, unreliable and of the highly disreputable sort. But how is the attached status of all current and PAST members?

That was a bit obvious. haha. No word was intentionally highlighted, you are mistaken if you choose to see otherwise.

The couple who was caught kissing in the car on the way to Punggol Nasi Lemak in Katong at Still Road need not reply. The rest OWN UP! Or I'll dig up the buried closet and pull the leetle skeletons one by one :)

Birthdays Galore

So it was the birthday celebrations of the Power of 3 in the club. Its just past Fush's birthday and now we're starting Sisi's birthday with Mac's following up closely behind. Of course, there's Zhenrong's 21st birthday on Wednesday too. Too many birthdays man. Well, Happy Birthday everyone!

Poor cake was under attack by the fencers. A really delicious cake. Yum.

All looking so pleased with their presents.

So some of us crashed Zhenrong's party. Thanks to the great navigating powers of Pam, 3 cars pulled up on the driveway and we marched up into the house shouting "Happy Birthday!" A bit obnoxious I might add. But well, we were led by Fush and CY, what more do I have to add?

The fishes were a tad freaky cos they were facing the same direction, for quite a while. I wonder what fascinated them so much.

With all your mental strength as a fencer. Hang in there. Fight your best, endure on. The light at the end of the tunnel is clear. It might not be very bright at the moment but you can see it. Just a little bit more, and you would have fought an enduring battle. Make it one of your best battles. Emerge victorious.

Hang in there. I know you guys are really tired being swamped with project deadlines and preparations for the impending final exam. But you're reaching the end of this hurdle. During this period, please do take good care of your health at the same time. Found this quote by Henry Ford which I felt rather apt for this entry. Thought it'll be nice to share:

"Unless you have courage, a courage that keeps you going, always going, no matter what happens, there is no certainty of success. It is really an endurance race.

For that, my friends, I hope you receive courage from my moral support by the sidelines. I wish everyone the best.

Kendo vs Fencing

Hey guys, thanks for the surprise. It was a great ending to a great day. Was supposed to go out with the family, but I missed fencing so much... glad I went though. Lao le. :)

Advance: Forward motion made by male fencers toward female fencers, usually resulting in a three-yard penalty, a red card, and a slap across the face.

Alléz: Place to go for a cigarette in the middle of a tournament

Attack in Preparation: When you sneak up and hit your opponent while they're still putting on their uniform.

Ballestra: Male ballerina.

Barrage: Shelling your opponent with cannon fire from several miles away.

Beat attack: Counting 'a-one, a-two, a-1,2,3,4' before hitting your opponent

Change of Engagement: Selecting a new fiancee.

Corps-a-corpse: Sin of the Fleche. French for "full contact fencing."

Coupe: Little foreign car fencers often drive.

Croise: A French pastry.

Derobement: The Houdini-like motions required by fencers to escape their straightjacket-like fencing uniforms.

I have come from the furthest reaches of the world (England actually!) to bring greetings and tidings from afar. The stars have heralded our glory (I consulted a renowned astrologer before joing SMU Fencing) and now it is. The elation I have and the pride I feel cannot be expressed with mere words (and certainly not with actions like buying presents). How far we have come, the blood(aka The Broken Toenails), the sweat, the tears... All have not been in vain!

My friends, we have finally attained our rightful position through our endless toil (just so you know the BAG is not light). Through it we have had occasions of mirth, sorrow, doubt, faith, forlorness, despair, tenacity and bravery. For that I salute you.

My fire is flagging, possibly dying and honestly my time is past. The winning of the team event was more memorable to me rather than the individual medal, simply because it was our finest performance and a true embodiment of spirit over form (of course Gold is better than Silver).
My teammates, I salute you.

I have noticed the trend of winning team medals (nice Gold ones) over that of individuals, and I would not disdain this. Rather, I take heart that individually, we may not be exceedingly stellar, but together in spirit, we are the brightest star. The medals are simply an outward expression of our teamwork. Once again, I salute you.

Above all, I salute you. For honour in our endeavours and dealings. We have never treated another club with disrespect or frowned upon them simply because of ability or aptitude. Neither has any unscrupulous act or knavery(mouthing curses on his lineage does not count) besmirched our name. For grace in both victory or defeat. Being able to calmly shake the hand of the smirking victor (regardless of how much we want to stick a point in him) or that of the fallen opponent without the opulence of winning. For the struggle of perfection in our art of fencing (which sadly I may be lacking). In which the spirit and attitude is more important but eyes have seen the consistency of effort and the steel in our faces.

For honour, for grace and perfection. For all, I salute you.

Till fair skies and the coming of the new year, may I grace you with my august presence. :)
